In 1930s Austria, on the eve of World War II, Baron von Trapp, a captain in the Imperial and Royal Austrian Navy, is left a widower at an early age. Since his wife’s passing, he has been raising his seven children alone. In the Trapp villa, a strict, military-like discipline reigns, allowing no room for defiance.

That is, until Maria Rainer arrives—a free-spirited novice struggling to conform to the rigid rules of Nonnberg Abbey. Not only does she disrupt the strict order of the household, but she also fills the villa and its hearts with life and music once more.

Maria’s independence, bold defiance, deep capacity for love, and passion for music and nature—elements that permeate the entire musical—have made The Sound of Music one of the most iconic pieces of musical theater. It is a life-affirming, joyfully entertaining, yet profoundly human story about love, belonging, and the power of music and romance, set against the backdrop of a darkening chapter in European history.
